Candidates for Maryland State Treasurer
The General Assembly of Maryland is charged by the Maryland Constitution with appointing the State Treasurer by joint ballot of the Senate and House of Delegates. A committee, appointed pursuant to Section 5-101(b) of the State Government Article of the Maryland Annotated Code, will review resumes of all applicants, hold a public hearing, and make a recommendation to the members of the General Assembly. The State Treasurer is the guardian of State funds, responsible for receiving, depositing, investing, and distributing State money. Among other duties, the Treasurer oversees the issuance of State debt, the investment of State funds, and the administration of the State Insurance Program. The State Treasurer also serves on a variety of fiscal planning committees and a number of other State boards, including the Board of Trustees of the Maryland State Retirement and Pension System and the Board of Public Works. The Honorable Dereck E. Davis, the current State Treasurer, has applied for reappointment.
Other applicants must submit their resumes no later than 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 7, 2023. Applicants may also be asked to present themselves at a public hearing to be held on Tuesday, February 14, 2023.
